Benefits
The new interconnector to Britain is absolutely vital for Ireland.
First and foremost, it will help ensure Ireland is able to access more energy into the future.
Energy security for a growing population
Energy security means making sure there is enough high-quality power to cater for a growing population that requires more and more electricity.
Beyond energy security, the interconnector also has several other benefits.
Promotes competition in the electricity sector
By connecting to the UK grid Ireland has access to power from right across Europe. This will create a more competitive market and help reduce the price of electricity for consumers.
Encourages the growth of renewable energy in Ireland
Once the interconnector is in place, we can increase our reliability on wind generated electricity. This is because we can use UK suppliers as a back-up for wind power and call on them during calm days in Ireland .
Likewise, when we have excess electricity (including wind generated electricity) it can be exported to the UK.
Allows Irish companies to sell power to the UK and vice-versa
The interconnector is a 2 way street. As well as importing energy, we can also export. This means that Irish companies can supply power to the UK market.
Energy can be imported from the UK when it is cheaper or if we do not have enough electricity being generated in Ireland.
By connecting to the UK grid, Ireland can access power from right across Europe (via an interconnector from Britain to the continent).
